Glaswegian-born Graeme Clark – better known as The Revenge - is a producer who not only understands the past, but also embraces the future. The latest of his releases, his Body Fusion EP, proves this once more.
It is with his analogue approach, forward thinking productions and impeccable versatility as a DJ that Graeme has cemented his position as one of the leading names in House music in recent years. Although there has been a shift in recent times, with much of his attention focused towards his work with longtime collaborator Craig Smith (as the 6th Borough Project), The Revenge has returned, and with him has come a brand new imprint – Roar Groove.
After placing the needle on the freshly pressed record, it becomes apparent that Graeme has gone back to what he knows best: analogue sounds mixed with live instrumentation and straightforward club dynamics designed to fill dance floors. Body Fusion nails it perfectly.
Wreck My Love opens the EP with sweeping, reversed drum samples before launching into a distinctive groove that slowly builds as the raw, live track is joined by a deep, pulsating bass line. It’s impossible to remain still as the moving synths swirl to accompany the soulful vocals that loop towards the track’s climax. It’s the perfect track for a warm-up set, as well as later on in the night. But it doesn’t stop there.
Wreck My Love is accompanied by The Joy on the A-Side, which is somewhat reminiscent of the 6th Borough Projects ‘The Vibes‘. It features an endlessly looping vocal sample and shows The Revenge take things a little deeper than the EP’s disco counterparts. The B-Side sees Lost Property return to a more upbeat club setting, while MWI picks up the tempo but goes a little deeper again.
Overall, the Body Fusion EP is a solid selection of songs that gives the DJ a degree of variety to play around with in their sets. There was only ever going to be one way to begin his new imprint and this is definitely it.
